Melvin H. King South End Academy

The Melvin H. King South End Academy is a therapeutic public day school that serves students with a primary disability of emotional impairment who require a high level of academic and/or therapeutic support. The school was renamed the Melvin H. King South End Academy in 2023 in honor of Boston Civil Rights hero and community activist, Melvin H. King.

Students utilize their experiential, linguistic, cultural, and racial diversity in order to expand their innate talents and to reach their short and long term goals. Students’ capacities to be aware of their emotions and to express them in prosocial and healthy ways are fostered. Students are able to articulate their needs and goals, to cultivate a positive sense of self, to utilize resources, and to increase their advocacy skills for themselves and others. As a result, students identify they can contribute positively to the world around them so they can reach their fullest potential both within and beyond MHKSEA.

The MHKSEA includes multiple programs with locations in Boston’s South End and Fenway neighborhoods. The South End Academy location serves students in grades K-12, and the Fenway locations serve grades 6-8 (MHK St. Mary’s Middle School) and grades 9-12 (MHK Prep). All of the sites provide high-quality education that includes academic and therapeutic support from dedicated staff who utilize a collaborative approach to ensure the needs of the diverse student population are met. Strong partnerships with caregivers, community members, and partners are a priority. A shared decision-making model is utilized via the School Site Council, School Parent Council, Student Council, and community-based partnerships. MHKSEA strives to foster a space that is demonstrative of the five core values: Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance, and Safety.
