    If you become aware of any special care or treatment required for any students, communicate the information confidentially to the nurse, so the information can be made available during emergencies. 

    “Universal Precautions” 

    Universal Precautions is a method of infection control in which all human blood and certain human body fluids are treated as if known to be infectious for HIV, HBV, and other blood-borne pathogens.  Exposure occurs through contact with mucous membranes (e.g., eyes, nose, and mouth) or broken (cut or abraded) skin with contaminated blood. 

    • Take universal precautions whenever there is a potential for contact with blood or other potentially infectious material. 
    • Treat all human blood and certain body fluids as infectious. 

    Medical Emergency Procedures 

    • Call the Main Office to report the medical emergency.  Provide the following information: 
      1. Nature of the incident 
      2. Location and number of victims 
      3. Nature of illness or injury 
      4. Hazards in the area (e.g. electrical shock, hazardous vapors, collapse potential, etc.) 
      5. Ambulance needed 
    • Provide First Aid assistance if you have been trained. 
    • Locate and direct the nurse to the victim(s) 
    • Control access to the scene; provide privacy for the sick or injured. 
    • Take Universal Precautions to prevent contact with bodily fluids. 
    • Do not clean up any bodily fluids, unless trained and properly equipped.
