    Dr. Elena Luna

    Elementary School Superintendent Region 5

Elena Luna is a proven leader. Guided by her values she teaches with Respect, leads with Humility, inspires with Relationships, and transforms with Courage. These values were shaped by her lived experiences as a daughter of Mexican working-class immigrants, first-generation college graduate and low-income student. These values have guided her work as an educator from her most recent experience as an Elementary School Superintendent with Boston Public Schools to her work at ACE Empower Academy in San Jose, CA as Principal and before that, as a national award-winning teacher and Principal at KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy in San Diego. Under her leadership, KIPP Adelante was awarded the National Excellence in Urban Education Award and as principal of ACE Empower Academy her 8th grade Algebra scores were #1 in Silicon Valley in Latino Algebra Proficiency for English Learners (2013).

Elena has excelled in strategically building strong school cultures where teachers and students thrive and families are an integral part of the school community. She has developed expertise in academic programming for English Language Learners, Culturally Responsive Teaching and coaching structures for first year teachers.

Ms. Luna received her BA in Social Work from San Diego State University and her MA in Social Sciences in Education from Stanford University. Now as a School Superintendent and member of the Division of Schools at BPS she continues her quest to find solutions to dismantling the oppressive nature of k-12 educational systems and designing K-12 systems that are inclusive, anti-racist, and empowering for historically oppressed communities.
