    Dr. Tommy Welch, Ed.D.

    School Superintendent Region 1 (K-12)

Dr. Tommy Welch’s 24 years in public education include service within the Boston and Los Angeles school districts. His career includes twelve years in the classroom as a teacher and instructional coach, four years as a middle and high school principal, and eight years as a school superintendent leading a cadre of early education, elementary, middle, high, and alternative schools. These experiences - ensuring young people flourish across multiple school types, communities, and roles - have prepared him to become a versatile leader in a large school district setting. He is a visionary instructional leader, highly effective manager, and natural relationship- and coalition-builder who acts daily on an unyielding commitment to excellence and equity.

As the Boston Public Schools School Superintendent of Region 1 for the majority of his eight years with Boston, Tommy supports 15 schools in Charlestown, East Boston, and the North End: two high schools, 12 elementary schools, and an early education center. His work prioritizes the improvement of academic outcomes of students within this diverse network of schools, as well as connecting leaders and resources within the network to provide a coherent instructional vision for all schools.

Tommy is a graduate of Occidental College and the University of California, Los Angeles. In 2020, he earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership at Boston College. Tommy lives in East Boston with his wife and is a parent of two BPS students.
